blo.gs to be sold, user data to be transferred i am in the final stages of completing a sale of blo.gs to a new owner, and expect to hand over the site, along with the user data, sometime on or after june 13, 2005.

so as spelled out in the blo.gs privacy policy, this is your opportunity to have your account deleted before this transfer happens. you can delete your account by going to http://blo.gs/quit.php, or by sending an email to delete@blo.gs.

i'm sorry i can't yet say who it is that will be acquiring blo.gs, but i can pass on the assurance that there will be no change in the privacy policy when they acquire the service and registered users will be given the opportunity to consent to any future change. they plan to continue providing the same features that exist now, and will be working on making blo.gs even better.

the new owners will be in touch shortly after they've taken over the service next month.

blogger.com updates offline our source of updates from blogger appears to have gone offline, so new updates of blogger-published weblogs (particularly those on blogspot.com) are unlikely to be noticed until this is fixed.

how to delete your account you can now easily delete your account, which will completely remove the information about your account and your favorites from our system.

blo.gs is for sale blo.gs is for sale, although plans are sketchy at this point. there’s no ebay auction or anything fancy like that. as the privacy policy says, registered users of the site will have the opportunity to opt out of the transfer to new ownership. we’ll have more details when (if) that event transpires.

now with more updates thanks to the team at pubsub.com, we are now receiving updates about when even more weblogs have been updated, included many livejournal users. we’re now processing somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 updates per second.

changes.xml and cloud interface being phased out (warning: this is not something most blo.gs users need to worry about.) at the end of this year, we will stop publishing the list of most recently updated blogs via changes.xml files and the previous HTTP-based cloud service. in their place, we have introduced a new service that combines the best qualities of those two services, and provides a streaming list of updated blogs.

advertising now available you can now buy text ads that appear on blo.gs through adbrite. feel free to contact us to negotiate different rates. the ads appear on all non-popup pages. (note: advertising is still available, but we may run amazon affiliate links and google adsense ads during periods when no ads have been directly purchased.)

xfn 1.1 support during the recent server travails, support for xfn 1.1 was added. this is a fairly minor update to how you can tag weblogs as belonging to friends, family members, and other related people. you can change the settings on the info page for any weblog in your favorites list.

back from maintenance as you may have noticed, blo.gs was down for maintenance most of today. things should now be humming along, and hopefully enough measures have been put in place to deal with the recent spike in robot-related load. we’ll be keeping a close eye on things, and some additional downtime tomorrow would not be entirely unexpected.

how to handle a blog that moves just a reminder, since it appears that several thousand blogs will have to find new homes soon: if your blog has moved, just let us know the old and new locations and we can merge the entries so that people who have marked your blog as a favorite at its old location will find it at the new location.

new blogs no longer included in email updates the option to get the list of new blogs in email updates has been removed completely, due to the frequent problems with the large emails this caused.

blogger redesign, updates not flowing when launching their newly redesigned site, the folks at blogger apparently forgot about the files that we use to find out about updated blogger-powered blogs. hopefully they’ll restore them soon.

unscheduled downtime blo.gs was down for a few hours today due to some unscheduled maintenance. things should be back to normal now. sorry for the interruption.

xfn support added support for adding xhtml friends network™ metadata to your favorites has been added. you can add information on your relationship to the people behind the blogs in your favorites list on the info page for each blog. (xfn support suggested by matt haughey.)

blogger.com updates flowing again blogger finally coughed up the new location for their changes file, so the updates are flowing again. (special thanks to ben hosken for pointing us to the right place even before blogger support did.)

no blogger.com updates the feed of updates from blogger.com appears to have disappeared. we’ve sent a help request into blogger to find out where it’s gone off to, but haven’t heard back yet. until it reappears, updates to blogger-powered blogs that don’t ping us directly (or weblogs.com) will not be noticed.

wanted: step-by-step instructions for pinging blo.gs it would be nice to have simple instructions for setting up various blogging packages to ping this site. unfortunately, we aren’t qualified to write them. are you? if you’d like to volunteer some instructions, drop us a note with a link (or send us the text and we’ll put it online here).

notifications no longer available via yahoo! messenger because of changes in yahoo!'s instant messaging platform, notifications of updated blogs are no longer available via yahoo! messenger.

more info on info pages one of the new features is that the info page for each blog now has more info, including links to other services that track or relate blogs, such as feedster and blogshares.

blo.gs redesigned as you may have noticed, the site has been redesigned. there are a few new features lurking within, and some of the features that have been added to the site along the way have become more prominent. enjoy.

new blogs by email the way new blogs are included in the daily emails has changed: instead of including all blogs that are new since the last time you "caught up", only blogs added since your last email was sent are included, and they are listed in a seperate section of the email, following the information about your favorite blogs.

blogs with non-ASCII names blo.gs now has improved support for blogs with non-ASCII names. using the XML-RPC ping interface, you can specify a name that includes the full range of utf-8 characters. some examples of xml-rpc pings including non-ASCII characters in the name are available. (support for this by popular weblogging tools is unknown right now, but hopefully such tools will be fixed to do the right thing.)

ttlb blogosphere ecosystem is now blo.gs-powered the ttlb blogosphere ecosystem now incorporates information about when the listed blogs were last updated from blo.gs. read the announcement.

blogchatter is now blo.gs-powered blogchatter is a real-time, browser-based display of recently updated weblogs that has hooked up to blo.gs via the cloud interface.

recommendations ever wonder what blogs similar to the ones you've indicated are your favorite might also be of interest? now you can get a list of those blogs by following the "recommendations" link on the front page (if you are logged in). the recommendations are based on the collective favorites of everyone who has a favorite blog in common with you.

importing from another service you may have heard of this tool called blogger. they're now generating a list of changed blogs that is being imported into our system (every ten minutes). there may be some changes to the design of this site to accomodate the increased volume of blogs.

info page for individual blogs there are now info links for each individual blog, which includes a list of up to twenty recent actions related to the blog, and a list of any urls that are considered equivalent to the primary one for the blog.

search blo.gs using mycroft pete has made a blo.gs search plugin for mycroft.

small addition to ping interface a small addition has been made to the HTTP GET version of the ping interface: you can now optionally include a "direct" parameter in order to receive a text response to the ping, rather than a redirect. (this is only really of importance to people writing software that pings blo.gs, and simply makes the responses easier to deal with in some environments.)

blogs in sweden Blogs Unmade is a weblog update tracking service (and much more) for swedish webloggers. some of the wheels under the bus are based on the blo.gs codebase.

favorites on the half shell paul hammond has made available a perl script to get the list of your favorite blogs and when they've been updated to put on your site.

sniffing for rss files thanks to mark pilgrim's rssfinder.py script, weblogs that ping blo.gs directly will now have their rss feed figured out automatically (based on straightforward set of heuristics).

blo.gs in the wsj? it is behind the locked door of subscription, but based on the referrer logs, the wall street journal may have mentioned blo.gs in this article. i'll just assume it was a flattering mention. we've also been linked from msnbc for a while now. update: here's an archived copy of the article in question. another favorites format you can now get your list of favorites in a format like radio userland's mySubscriptions.opml.

who's the belle of the ball? you can now see the most popular blogs, as measured by the number of people who have added them to their list of the blogs to watch. update: and now, you can also click on the related link on blogs that two or more people have added to their list of favorites to see what blogs appear to be related to that one.

back to normal? no promises that they'll stay that way, but things appears to have returned to normal operation.

it sure is quiet around here because of the ongoing service disruption at weblogs.com, you may notice that many weblogs aren't showing up as updated. (weblogs that ping us instead of, or in addition to, weblogs.com, are showing up as usual, of course.)

using your blogroll with php phil ringnalda has written a tutorial on adding your blogroll to a web page using php.

at the tone, the time will be... you can now specify a date format to be used in the javascript flavor of your exported favorites list.

privacy policy i've put up a privacy policy, because it is the right thing to do. there's also a new contact form, and there's a link on search results that you can use to report duplicate or dead entries.

is it getting cloudy? inspired by sam ruby, i've implemented a cloud interface for weblog updates. this means that you can get notified when we get notified (via ping) about an updated blog. hopefully, this will allow services like weblogs.com, blogtracker, and us to cooperate more closely. the details are here. obviously, it would be nice to register to get notified only whenever a blog on your watch list is updated. it's on the todo list.

less is more thanks to a recent upgrade at my hosting provider, i've turned on gzip-encoding of some of the pages here. that should cut the site's bandwidth usage (not significant now, but it doesn't hurt to economize) and could result in zippier performance for those on slower connections. let me know if you encounter problems (and please provide details on what browser you're using).

email updates restored due to an unfortunate oversight, the email updates weren't going out. this has been fixed. as an added bonus, the emails will now include new news items along with the list of updated blogs.

share your favorites you can now share your favorites with the world, in xml and javascript formats. this means that you can put your list of favorites, along with when they've last been updated, on your weblog. read the description for more information. (and don't worry, your list of favorites is private by default.)

the ten-foot poll you may notice a few weblogs showing up because they're being polled. stay tuned for an interface to allow you to request that a weblog be polled for updates.

pitas and other flatbreads the recently updated list from pitas.com is now imported hourly.

pane and popupering okay, so not only is there a popup, there's also support for loading the same thing as a netscape/mozilla sidebar or an internet explorer search pane. links (suitable for dragging to the toolbar) are on the right.

cute as a button if you've signed in, you'll notice a new link on the sidebar: 'tiny popup'. this works like blogtracker's tinytracker.

who's the rat? each link now has a title set that indicates where the information came from and when. (mozilla shows this information in a tooltip. other browsers may or may not make that information visible.)

i'll set your table the new features just keep flowing. you can change your settings now, including your timezone. you can also enable a daily email of updated weblogs you're watching (including new ones, if you so choose).

hey look, a news page now i've got a venue to blab about whatever new features i happen to dredge up. like a news page. the most recent news item also appears on the front page.
